Free Fashion and Fun at Clothing Swaps

If you're looking for fashionable clothes that make a statement on an artist's budget, you should check around your city for clothing swaps.

Clothing swaps are events where you bring the clothes you don't want anymore and walk away other gently-used clothes for free or a small charitable donation.  Some swap organizers will request a few dollars or specific items (such as canned goods or a bottle of wine) as an event favor or entry fee.

Sometimes events have stipulations or requirements, like styles for certain age groups, gender-specific clothing, a limit on how much clothing you are allowed to take (usually in direct proportion to what you donate), schedules, seasonal clothing, or membership, as some examples.

Swaps aren't always limited to clothes, though.  Often there will be shoes, jewelry, home accessories, CDs, movies and other items.

Swaps are easy to find by searching Google, Facebook, WordPress, and lots of other sites.  (It helps to specify your location in your search.)  You may also find advertisements or announcements in local papers and magazines.

Many times, clothing that is not taken by the end of the meet will be donated to a charitable organization, and most swap organizers are happy to share information about what happens to the clothing that no one takes and the organizations they donate to.

Here are some examples of websites with clothing swap announcements and information:
